Title: McMullen's proof of the g-theorem for polytonal spheres

Speaker: Eric Katz

Abstract: The g-theorem is a powerful result that characterizes the
face numbers of simplicial polytopes.  The hardest part of it was
proven by Stanley using ideas from algebraic geometry.  We review
McMullen's later, combinatorial proof of the g-theorem for polytopal
spheres which uses a synthetic Hodge theory argument.  We will situate
this proof in a broader, deeper combinatorial framework.
