Title: Introduction to Monotone Operators
Speaker: | Naomi Graham |
Affiliation: | University of Waterloo |
Room: | MC 5501 |
Abstract:
This talk will be an entry level introduction to the theory of monotone operators as they are presented in Bauschke and Combette’s Convex Analysis and Monotone Operator Theory in Hilbert Spaces. We will discuss maximally monotone operators and their connection to resolvents as well as fixed points of nonexpansive operators. We will see that some classical optimization algorithms can be formulated as iteratively approximating the fixed points of the resolvent of some maximally monotone operator.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
