Title: Tangent Lines and the equation 28 = 7 × 4
Speaker: | Yoav Len |

Room: | MC 5501 |
Abstract:
I will discuss combinatorial aspects of tangent lines to curves and planar graphs. In algebraic geometry, every smooth plane curve has finitely many lines that are tangent to it at two separate points. My talk will revolve around a combinatorial analogue of this fact in tropical geometry, which hides rich combinatorics, and is related to other phenomena such as sandpile models and harmonic covers of graphs. I will not assume any knowledge in tropical or algebraic geometry.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
