Abstract:
With
Bert
Gerards
and
Geoff
Whittle
we
have
a
structural
characterization
of
the
matroids
in
any
minor-closed
class
over
any
given
finite
field.
The
structural
description
is
qualitative
in
that
not
all
of
the
matroids
with
the
prescribed
structure
need
be
in
the
class.
However,
for
sufficiently
connected
matroids,
we
can
give
a
precise
structural
characterization.
In
this
talk
I
will
describe
that
characterization
as
well
as
a
number
of
potential
applications.
