Students are required to complete one of the following activities:
- Successfully complete a course on mathematics teaching approved by the Graduate Officer. The course will not be counted towards the course requirements for the degree.
- Give at least three lectures observed by faculty members from the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization, University of Waterloo, during the program of studies. The faculty members will provide confidential, constructive feedback on the lectures to the student. The lectures must additionally satisfy the following conditions:
- Two faculty members must each attend at least two lectures with the same format.
- The lectures must be at least 20 minutes in duration, and at least two of the lectures must be at least 45 minutes in duration.

Forms
Fill out the following form and submit it to the C&O Graduate Coordinator to record completion of the PhD Lecturing Requirement:
Students and faculty observers may optionally use the following worksheets (or any other feedback mechanism) to help prepare for the lecture observation and structure feedback. If these worksheets are used, they are solet for the use of the student and faculty observer, and do not need to be submitted to the department.
Lecture Pre-Observation Preparation Worksheet (Word file), to be used by the student
Lecture Observation Feedback Worksheet (Word file), to be used by the observer
Additional Details
The observers should be faculty members with an appointment in Combinatorics & Optimization, which can include cross appointed, adjunct, or emeritus professors. If you want to have someone else observe the lecture, please contact the Graduate Officer to discuss. Observers should attend the lecture in person.
