C&O professor David Gosset and John Smolin (IBM T.J. Watson Research Center) will receive the Outstanding Paper Prize at TQC 2019, the 14th Conference on the Theory of Quantum Computation, Communication and Cryptography.
Their paper, entitled A compressed classical description of quantum states, presents a method for quickly computing a compressed representation of a quantum state using the square root of the usual amount of classical memory. An important feature of their representation is that it is possible to approximate the expectation value of an arbitrary observable with high probability.
TQC 2019 will be held from June 3-5, 2019 at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
