Jochen Koenemann
On July 1, 2020, Professor Jochen Koenemann begins a two-year term as chair of the Combinatorics and Optimization (C&O) department. Jochen succeeds Professor Chaitanya Swamy, who led the department during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jochen joined the C&O department in 2004 after completing his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University and a postdoctoral fellowship at Sapienza -  Università di Roma. His research interests are in approximation algorithms, algorithmic game theory, and combinatorial optimization. Jochen has already served two terms as C&O department chair, from 2010-2011 and 2016-2019. He has been an Amazon Scholar since 2019, working with Amazon's Modeling and Optimization team on strategic network planning issues arising in Amazon's fulfillment operations.
