Professor Levent Tuncel was announced a winner of the 2012 Faculty of Mathematics Award for Distinction in Teaching.
Professor Tuncel was recognized for his outstanding teaching as well as his development of optimization courses at all levels.
His students enthusiastically supported Tuncel's nomination, referencing his "superhuman perfection" and "keen sense of humour to go along with his fine sense of mathematical beauty." Here are some excerpts from the many letters of support that Professor Tuncel received:
"I truly believe Professor Tuncel does all he can to make sure his students both succeed and achieve their highest mathematical potential."
"A lot of professors can practice giving entertaining lectures, but Professor Tuncel was also funny and engaging when spontaneously answering questions from students."
"I feel that he really pushes the students to their limit, and now that I'm pursuing a PhD in math, I really appreciate his classes."

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
