SRA 2021 Workshop: What Scenarios Are You Missing? A systemic approach to black swans, perfect storms, dragon-kings

Friday, December 10, 2021 8:00 am - 8:00 am EST (GMT -05:00)
SRA Workshop Title and Diagram

This workshop will interest risk analysts seeking solutions for anticipating the potentially good or bad consequences of surprises or unforeseen events when analysing risk. This workshop focuses on system complexity and how it can be leveraged analytically to avoid surprises. The workshop demonstrates and applies both fundamental and state-of-the-art methods and tools for how to specify complex yet poorly characterized systems underlying any decision context. Such approaches can be quite simple (i.e., ‘back of the envelope’) yet, when combined with software, become powerful enough to determine opportunities to guard against risk or to advance problem solution. Workshop participants will learn a straightforward 3-step process of

  1. identifying key system variables,
  2. diagramming their direct influences on each other, and
  3. translating their influence diagram into a modelling tool through applying the free software package ScenarioWizard.

Through these activities, participants will learn to conduct a parsimonious yet thorough system analysis, glean useful insights, and communicate findings to create a strategy or call to action.

Workshop facilitators: Dr. Vanessa Schweizer, University of Waterloo, Department of Knowledge Integration & Christina Marie Comeau, University of Waterloo, PhD student in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability
