Lang is a native of Western Canada and spent his formative years at the University of British Columbia (2003-2007) and the University of Alberta (2007-2009) where he completed a BSc in honours mathematics and an MSc in applied mathematics. His research interests during these early years focused on epidemiological and immunological models for the spread of a disease through a population or host. After the 2007-2008 financial crisis Lang became interested in modelling of social systems and decided to complete an MSc in econometrics and mathematical economics at the London School of Economics (2009-2011).
