His academic background is in applied mathematics and computer science (MSc '03, Nayanova University, Russia), and he gained industrial experience as a software engineer before starting a PhD. After completing his PhD in physics (2008, University College Cork, Ireland), Sergey moved into the interdisciplinary field of network science. He held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Limerick, Ireland and University of Oxford, U.K.
Sergey’s research interests include modelling the structure and dynamics of complex networks, numerical simulation and data analysis with applications to the spread of influence and adoption in social networks, the spread of infectious diseases through population, the propagation of defaults in financial systems (systemic risk), and cascading failures in infrastructure networks.
