Title
Quantum Computing: Why It Matters Now
Abstract
Quantum computing is advancing rapidly, with growing potential to address important computational challenges across science, technology and industry. The Research Centre for Quantum Information, Simulation and Algorithms (QUISA) at The University of Western Australia brings together researchers working across a broad range of areas, from fundamental theory to emerging applications. This seminar will provide an overview of QUISA’s current research in quantum algorithms for differential equations, quantum linear algebra, tensor networks, and complex-system modeling. It will also briefly highlight applications in optimisation, image and signal processing, bioinformatics, finance and medicine, alongside QUISA’s activities in quantum foundations and education. Together, these projects illustrate why quantum computing matters, why progress in the field is timely, and how foundational research may contribute to practical applications.
Some familiarity with quantum computing is helpful, but no advanced knowledge is required.
Biography
Prof Jingbo Wang is the Founding Director of the Research Centre for Quantum Information, Simulation and Algorithms at The University of Western Australia. An active advocate within the quantum community, she brings people together across research and industry to explore quantum approaches to complex challenges. Prof Wang holds leadership roles in the Australian Centre for Quantum Growth and the ARC Training Centre for Future Leaders in Quantum Computing. She is also passionate about supporting diversity in STEM, serving as Co-Director of the Quantum Girls program to encourage young women into quantum careers.
