Open House: Computers at the Movies

Come to the Computer Museum Open House on Tuesday March 18, 11am to 4pm in the Davis Centre Fishbowl (room 1301).

Our theme this time is "Computers at the Movies". We'll feature computers from movies and TV--some well-known and some fairly obscure. We'll also be running a few of our older computers for you to try, including a few video games inspired by movies or TV.

And did you know scenes from a Hollywood movie were once filmed here on campus, in the famous computing centre known as the "Red Room"? Come learn more and check out the clips!

Finally, we will also have some recent acquisitions on display.

Attendance is free! No sign-ups, just drop by.

On Tuesday, July 28th, 11:00AM–4:00PM, we will be holding our Spring 2026 Computer Museum Open House in the Davis Centre Fishbowl (room number DC1301).

This term's theme is Re-Creations: Clones and Copies. From sequels to remakes, there's much to be had about adaptations. Retro computers, interactive exhibits, and artifacts aplenty!

Michael Gardi (B.Math 1982) will be showcasing his latest reproduction of the Sol-20 at 12:30PM during the Open House. Michael is an avid maker who has recreated dozens of computers, gadgets, and trinkets.

All are welcome! Attendance is free, and there are no sign-ups. Just drop by.

Summer Partnership: Iron Willed at the City of Waterloo Museum

From the clickety-clack of old typewriters to the beeps and bloops of retro computers, the University of Waterloo Computer Museum preserves and exhibits artifacts related to the history of computing.

Join us on August 11, 12-4pm at the City of Waterloo Museum at Conestoga Mall. As part of their 2026 exhibit Iron Willed: Women in STEM, we're setting up a few artifact tables rain (indoors) or shine (outdoors).

We’ll bring some of those original typewriters, computers and video games for visitors to try, plus some activity sheets and colouring pages for all ages. And our staff will be there to chat about your first computer or your favourite retro video game or hardware.
