Graduate Student Senator Election Nominations Open!

The Senate, established through the University of Waterloo Act, 1972, is Waterloo's highest academic governing body, responsible for oversight of a variety of matters. The composition of Senate is representative of the University community, with both elected and ex-officio membership.  Senators include faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, governors and administrative staff.

This serves as notice of a call for nominations to fill upcoming graduate student seats on Senate. Two graduate students are to be elected by and from the full- and part-time graduate students of the University. The positions have two-year terms from September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2028.

Nominations must be supported by at least five nominators from among the Waterloo graduate student population. To be eligible for nomination, candidates must be a full or part-time graduate student. A brief candidate statement (100 words maximum) must be submitted with the nomination form to appear with the election ballot.

If you are interested, please visit Elections and Campaigning | Secretariat | University of Waterloo or email the Secretariat at elections@uwaterloo.ca for more details. The nomination period opened on January 7, 2026. Forms must be received by 4:30 p.m. on January 28, 2026.

Voting will begin at 9:00am on Tuesday, February 3 and will close February 10 at 4:30pm.

Please refer to Senate Bylaw 3 for more information about nominations and elections. Any questions relating to the above, or the role and expectations of a senator may be directed to the Secretariat via elections@uwaterloo.ca .

*Terms and eligibility are defined in the University of Waterloo Act. Please note that graduate student senators shall not be members of faculty or members of the full-time staff of the University or of the affiliated and federated institutions of Waterloo (AFIWs).
