Subject: St. Patrick's Day
To all Waterloo students,
St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, and you may be planning to celebrate with friends. If you do, please enjoy the day safely — look out for your friends and peers, use good judgment and always make sure consent is a priority. Consider celebrating at a nearby establishment or a sanctioned event.
The University of Waterloo discourages participation in any large street gatherings, as they can quickly get out of hand. In the past, these events have led to situations like excessive drinking, overdoses, assaults and people feeling unsafe. Street parties also take first responders away from emergencies. If they’re busy managing a street party, they may not be able to respond when someone truly needs help.
If you choose to celebrate, please keep your surroundings and your neighbours in mind. Follow guidance from regional officials, including police and paramedics, and help maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone in the Waterloo community.
Waterloo Region police and bylaw officers will be enforcing the Nuisance Bylaw. People violating the bylaw can be ticketed or charged. Violations include drinking in public, obstructing traffic, public urination, littering, destruction of property and similar activities. Violations can result in fines of up to $1,200.
If you see anything concerning or need support, you can contact urgent help options. In an emergency, call 911.
