Award description:
A fellowship, valued at up to $30,000, will be awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the doctoral program in the School of Optometry & Vision Science in the Faculty of Science. The scholarship will be paid in equal instalments over the standard program length, as long as they remain registered full-time. Selection is based on academic excellence and demonstrated interest in amblyopia research. Students are identified and selected by the School of Optometry & Vision Science Graduate Office based on their application for admission. This fund is made possible through the generosity of Severin Hacker to elevate exceptional research and improve visual outcomes for patients with amblyopia.

Value description:
One fellowship valued at up to $30,000 to be awarded to one student through the completion of a Vision Science PhD at the University of Waterloo. The scholarship selection will be in Winter 2025.

Eligibility & selection criteria:

  • Graduate student registered full-time in the doctoral program in School of Optometry & Vision Science in the Faculty of Science.
  • Selection to be based on academic excellence (minimum 80% cumulative average or equivalent in their current or most recently graduated program) and demonstrated research in amblyopia. Consideration is given to research projects/activities that focus on the human visual cortex development and plasticity, particularly on promoting plasticity to improve outcomes.
  • Preference will be given to students who do not concurrently hold a major scholarship exceeding $3,000 per term at the time of admission.
  • This funding will be in addition to the minimum funding the student may already be receiving. The scholarship will be paid in equal instalments each term for as long as the student is registered full-time within time limits of the program (12 terms).
  • Future instalments of the award are contingent upon maintaining good academic standing (as defined by the recipient’s academic program and full-time enrolment in the doctoral program in the School of Optometry & Vision Science.
  • In the event that a recipient fails to meet the renewal criteria, or completes their degree early, residual funds may be used to offer additional scholarships based on the above criteria.
  • The School of Optometry & Vision Science Graduate Office will identify and select a recipient based on their application for admission.
