Canada Day celebrations a fireworks-only affair
The University of Waterloo's Canada Day celebrations are going out with a bang.
"We are very proud to have hosted Waterloo’s Canada Day celebrations for the last 34 years," wrote Vice-President, University Relations Sandra Banks in a memo circulated to campus on Wednesday. "In 1984, the Federation of Students and the University of Waterloo created a community event that grew in size and scope year after year. After a thorough evaluation, we concluded that hosting and organizing a large-scale entertainment event of this nature is no longer a sustainable role for the University."
This year is a fireworks-only event, with the show beginning at 10:00 p.m., weather permitting. Unlike in previous years, there will be no musical performances, food vendors or other activities at the event.
Columbia Street will close at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1. Free parking is available in all University parking lots from 8:00 p.m. onwards. There are several options available to get to campus to watch the fireworks this year. Service across Grand River Transit’s entire system – including the Ion light rail – is free now through to Canada Day. Please consider using public transport, bicycles or foot power instead of driving.
There is a detailed Frequently-Asked Questions (FAQ) on the Community Relations and Events website for more information.
"The University is working with the City of Waterloo as they explore alternative Canada Day events for future years, engaging with local leaders on how the community might wish to celebrate the event in the future," Banks writes.
In the case of inclement weather on Canada Day, please follow the University on its social media accounts or visit www.uwaterloo.ca/canada-day for updates and information.
Marchers, runners, and cyclists - a roundup of moves on a mission
The Glow Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity organized a University of Waterloo contingent to march in the Toronto Pride Parade on Sunday, June 23. Among the marchers were Associate Vice-President, Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion Professor Diana Parry, Recreation and Leisure Studies Professor and Applied Health Sciences HeForShe Faculty Advocate Corey Johnson, and Associate Professor Lisbeth Berbary.
The University's T&T Running Group members participated in the Waterloo Classic on Father’s Day. "It was perfect running weather," writes group member Carlos Radic of Plant Operations. "Now we need to rest and recover. We are planning on taking part in the AHS Fun Run later this year. Pictured are Carlos Medina, Adam Toplician, Jonathan Hyde, Rose Penner, Carlos Radic and Alexander Radic. The T&T Running Group is open to all comers and meets at the corner of the School of Optometry and Vision Science building and Laurel Trail at 12:10 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays (editor's note: Tuesdays and Thursdays? T&T? It all makes sense now!)
June is Bike Month at Waterloo, and Philosophy lecturer Greg Andres is taking it to the extreme. After delivering a philosophy talk, Andres left Vancouver on June 5, beginning a bike tour across Canada. He aims to reach Halifax by mid-August and cap off his trip with an east coast philosophy talk. Last week Greg crossed the Alberta border, saying “Nothing but downhill and tailwinds from now on!" His reports so far indicate that the Canada geese in BC are more intimidating than the bears. You can follow Greg’s adventures on his blog. A donation to the charity GiveWell gets you a bingo card marked with Greg’s adventures and a chance to win a tacky souvenir.
