Dominic Barton to deliver President's Lecture
Incoming Chancellor of the University of Waterloo Dominic Barton will visit campus on Friday, September 21 and deliver a President's Lecture entitled "Dimensions of Global Disruption."
Dominic Barton, Global Managing Partner Emeritus, McKinsey & Co. was recently appointed as the University of Waterloo's eleventh Chancellor.
In his remarks, Barton will share his insights and reflections on the global economy and on the University of Waterloo's position and opportunities as a leader in global innovation. A fireside chat will follow the lecture.
President and Vice-Chancellor Feridun Hamdullahpur will deliver opening remarks.
The President's Lecture will take place on Friday, September 21 at 9:30 a.m. in the Humanities Theatre. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. Register on Ticketfi. Admission is free.
Barton's lecture is part of a suite of activities that he will participate in on campus that day, including a tour of campus and a visit to Velocity.
Previous President's Lecture Series speakers include Harvard professor Eric Mazur and Nobel Prize-winning economist Edmund S. Phelps.
Help welcome new students to campus
Campus might be quiet at the moment, but before you know it, thousands of new students will be arriving in Waterloo, moving into residence, and participating in an array of engaging Orientation activities. A campus-wide partnership between many departments, Orientation runs from Friday, August 31 to Saturday, September 8. In addition to events for all first-year students, there will be targeted programming for various groups including first-year international, first-year American and out-of-province, transfer, exchange/study abroad, and graduate students.
Classes begin for all students during Orientation Week on Thursday, September 6 and will follow the normal Thursday schedule.
Staff and faculty can help welcome our new students to campus in a number of ways:
Provide a helping hand
The transition to university can be both exciting and overwhelming for new students. You can help support their transition by wearing a “Here to Help” button and taking a few minutes out of your day to answer questions from students or their families. If you don’t know the answer to a question, please check the Here to Help page or direct students to the Orientation Ask Me Booth, located near the Great Hall inside the Student Life Centre (SLC), the Orientation social media accounts, or UWaterloo Portal. You can also help welcome new students and their families via other opportunities like Family Send-off, Warrior Wayfinding, or other staff and faculty volunteer opportunities.
Single and Sexy Premiere
Come celebrate 30 years of Single and Sexy! Written by Waterloo students and one of the most talked about features of Orientation, the popular play focuses on situations many students encounter while living away from home for the first time. The play takes place in the Physical Activities Complex (PAC) and is open to everyone – including staff, faculty, and guests – to attend. The Premiere will take place at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, August 31. Doors open at 10:30 a.m.

Multi-Year Accessibility Plan session this week
The Accessibility Committee has put together a Multi-year Accessibility Plan (MYAP) for the University of Waterloo, and is requesting feedback from persons with disabilities and others in the Waterloo community. Creating and maintaining a campus that is welcoming for everyone impacts students, staff and faculty. The MYAP is an on-going initiative that will require continued collaboration to ensure that accessibility considerations are embedded within the University’s culture. It is intended to support and align with our commitments under Policy 58: Accessibility and meet our obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Beyond that, our long-term goals will be to improve access to our campus by adopting best practices and being innovative in the realm of accessibility.
There will be an information session held Wednesday to provide a summary of the plan and address questions and comments around the MYAP. Attendees will receive a follow-up questionnaire on the plan and have an opportunity to provide feedback.
The session takes place on Wednesday, August 22 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
