ECE 499 - Engineering Project

ECE 499 is a single-term elective course that allows students to complete an independent engineering project under the supervision of a faculty member. The course is normally taken during 4A or 4B and may be taken once during an undergraduate degree.

Students may propose their own project topic or work on a topic suggested by a faculty supervisor. The project culminates in a written report that is evaluated by faculty members.

ECE 499 is also a popular option for students considering graduate studies, as it provides an opportunity to gain research experience and work closely with a faculty member.

Supervisor

Before registering, students must secure a project supervisor, typically an ECE faculty member. Students are encouraged to review faculty research interests and contact potential supervisors directly to discuss project opportunities.

In exceptional cases, supervisors from other Engineering departments may be approved.

Team projects are permitted when the scope and complexity of the project justify a team approach.

Registration

Once a supervisor has agreed to oversee the project, complete the ECE 499 Project Approval Form and submit it to:

  • Course Coordinator: mcrowley@uwaterloo.ca
  • ECE Advising: eceadvis@uwaterloo.ca

Students should normally finalize their project before the end of the term's add/drop period. After the approved form is received, departmental staff will authorize enrollment in ECE 499.

Project Evaluation

At the end of the term, students must submit a project report for evaluation. The report is reviewed by:

  • the project supervisor, and
  • a second faculty member selected by the supervisor.

The evaluation is submitted using the ECE 499 Grade Report form and returned to the Course Coordinator and ECE Undergraduate Office.

To allow sufficient time for evaluation and grade submission, reports should be submitted by the end of classes whenever possible, and no later than one week after classes end.
