To receive a degree, students must fulfill all specific program degree requirements as outlined in the Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA) Academic Calendar. Keep track of the important dates as posted in GSPA calendar and use the Engineering degree completion deadlines as guidance.
To ensure students are fully informed about the requirements and procedures for earning an Engineering degree, they should visit the Engineering Program Guidelines. This resource provides comprehensive details on:
- Degree requirements
- Degree completion deadlines
- Steps to graduate
For graduate petitions and & student issues refer to the appropriate university policy.
Once students have completed all their degree requirements, they should apply to graduate through Quest. Students will need to select their expected graduation term, which should be the term in which they anticipate completing all degree requirements.
Degree requirements
For a complete list of a program's degree requirements, students should consult the GSPA Graduate Academic Calendar.
Coursework for MEng, MASc and PhD students:
- Each student must successfully complete a specified number of graduate courses (600 or 700 level) as required by their program. Students should review their program requirements to determine the specific courses they need to take.
ECE MASc students:
- MASc students are required to submit a thesis and schedule a seminar presentation.
- Students should follow the steps for MASc degree completion and be aware of the degree completion deadlines.
ECE PhD students:
ECE PhD Comprehensive Background Examination:
The Comprehensive Background Examination, will be held before the end of the third term (fourth term if from an incomplete MASc). The main objective of this examination is to satisfy the Department that the candidate has a broad knowledge of their field and a thorough technical background to pursue their research; the candidate will be questioned on their background preparation.
Engineering PhD Comprehensive Proposal Examination:
The PhD degree is awarded after candidates have satisfied the Examining Committee that their thesis is a substantial original contribution to knowledge and have also demonstrated a high degree of competence in areas of knowledge related to their specialization. The Comprehensive Proposal Examination is held before the end of the sixth term (seventh term if from an incomplete MASc).
ECE PhD Seminar
The aim of the seminar is to provide students with experience in preparing and presenting their work. The seminar must be held no later than the end of the third year (ninth term) following the initial registration in the program.
Engineering PhD Thesis and Defence:
The thesis topic is determined by the student and supervisor(s), in consultation with an advisory committee. The proposed research program is also evaluated during the Comprehensive Proposal Examination. Students should follow the steps for PhD degree completion and be aware of the degree completion deadlines.
