New Students

Welcome to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering!

We're thrilled to welcome you to our department, home to a diverse group of talented researchers, lecturers, and scholars. We look forward to your contribution to the exciting and impactful work happening in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UW.

Take the first step in your academic journey by signing up for department-specific information sessions. These sessions are designed exclusively for accepted students like you and offer a unique, insider’s perspective on your new department. Prior to the sessions, you will receive an email with instructions on how to sign up.

Information about the next new student and orientation sessions will be emailed to applicable students. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the graduate team directly.

Required training

Please ensure you review the ECE Training Requirements and Safety Manual, as completion of the required training is mandatory before accessing any ECE office or lab space.

Office space

FULL-TIME MASC AND PHD STUDENT SPACE ASSIGNMENT

ECE provides desk space in a shared office or research lab, as available, to full-time graduate students (in research-based programs) for the duration of their studies.

To obtain office or lab space within the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department, all requests must be initiated by faculty supervisors. This ensures alignment with research needs, departmental planning, and space availability.

NOTE:Access to office or lab space will only be granted once safety training has been successfully completed with a minimum score of 80%. Proof of completion must be uploaded prior to key issuance.

PART-TIME MASC AND PHD STUDENT SPACE ASSIGNMENT

Part-time MASc and PhD students can book their use of a desk in a hoteling office space daily (subject to availability, and provided all safety training is complete).

MENG STUDENT SPACE ASSIGNMENT

Graduate students in course-based programs (MEng) are provided access to communal workspace with private study carrels and collaborative desks.

To obtain the door code to enter these student spaces, please contact Christina McDougall at cmcdouga@uwaterloo.ca.

NOTE: Access to office or lab space will only be granted once safety training has been successfully completed with a minimum score of 80%. Proof of completion must be uploaded prior to key issuance.

Once you successfully navigate this transition, be sure to explore all the resources available for current graduate students.
