A doctoral student at Waterloo Engineering took a top-five spot this week in a global competition organized by the world’s largest engineering design magazine.

Ala Eldin Omer earned an honorable mention in the medical category of the 2020 Create the Future contest staged by Tech Briefs.

His entry involved new, non-invasive technology to monitor glucose levels for people with diabetes using radar and artificial intelligence, eliminating the need for finger pricks to draw blood.

The contest attracted more than 750 entries from 60 countries.

Also on the team were Waterloo Engineering professors George Shaker and Safieddin Safavi-Naeini.
