The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Dr. Ahmed Sayed, a former PhD student in our department, who has been awarded the Best PhD Thesis Award from Drones. Drones is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by MDPI—a pioneer in scholarly, open-access publishing, supporting academic communities since 1996.
Dr. Sayed completed his PhD under the co-supervision of ECE professor Dr. Omar Ramahi and Dr. George Shaker, an adjunct associate professor in the ECE department. His award-winning doctoral thesis, titled "UAV Detection Based on Adaptive Radar Signal Processing," was selected from global submissions, earning him this prestigious recognition.
Launched in 2021, the Drones Best PhD Thesis Award is presented biennially to recognize a single young scholar worldwide who has made exceptional contributions to the field of drone technology. The selection process is rigorous, and only one award is granted each year. Dr. Sayed’s recognition highlights the calibre of research carried out in the department and reflects ECE’s commitment to fostering innovation and excellence at Waterloo.
Congratulations to Dr. Sayed and to his supervisors, Dr. Ramahi and Dr. Shaker, for this remarkable accomplishment that brings further distinction to our research community.
