Weihua Zhuang

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Waterloo is celebrating an exciting milestone as Dr. Weihua Zhuang has been named a double nominee for the 2026 Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Women of the Year Awards.

Recognized for both her lasting influence and continued innovation, Zhuang is nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Award—a rare distinction that reflects the breadth of her impact, from mentoring generations of engineers to shaping the future of communication technologies.

For more than half a century, the Women of the Year Awards have honoured women across the Waterloo region whose leadership and dedication have driven meaningful change. Zhuang’s nomination places her among a distinguished group of community leaders, while also spotlighting the global reach of research happening within ECE.

At the heart of Zhuang’s work is a vision for the networks that will power tomorrow’s world. Her research tackles some of the most complex challenges in modern communications—developing intelligent, adaptive systems that can support everything from autonomous vehicles to smart cities. By blending technical insights from model-based theoretical analysis with machine learning tools, she is helping to design networks that are not only faster and more efficient, but also resilient to the ever-changing demands of users and technology.

Her contributions have earned international recognition, including fellowship in multiple national academies and professional organizations, as well as her designation as a University Professor—one of the University of Waterloo’s highest honours. Most recently, she was named to the 2025 Highly Cited Researchers™ list, placing her among the top one per cent of researchers worldwide based on the influence of her published work.

Within the department and beyond, Zhuang is also widely recognized for her mentorship and leadership, supporting students and researchers as they navigate and shape a rapidly evolving field.

The 2026 Women of the Year Awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 21, bringing together leaders from across the region to celebrate achievement, impact, and inspiration. For the ECE community, Zhuang’s nomination is both a moment of pride and a reflection of the department’s ongoing contributions to advancing technology and society.
