Electrical and computer engineering professor, Kankar Bhattacharya, awarded the prestigious IEEE Canada P.D. Ziogas Electric Power Silver Medal Award

Electrical and computer engineering professor, Kankar Bhattacharya has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the esteemed IEEE Canada P.D. Ziogas Electric Power Silver Medal Award. His important contributions to the field of Electrical Power Engineering have distinguished him as an outstanding Canadian Engineer. The award will be presented to Professor Bhattacharya at an awards gala in August as part of IEEE’s flagship conference, the IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE 2024) in Kingston, Ontario.

Professor Bhattacharya joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo in 2003, where currently serves as the department’s chair. He is a University Research Chair and a Fellow of the IEEE.

His research interests include power system operations, planning and economics; electricity market operations and design; renewable energy resources and their economics, planning and operational issues; demand side management, demand response, and various emerging problems in the smart grid environment.

Professor Bhattacharya received the ABB Sweden Gunnar Engstrom Foundation Award (2001) for research in power system economics. He is the author of the well-received book Operation of Restructured Power Systems (2001). He served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems (2005-2011) and IEEE Power Engineering Letters (2005-2011). He currently serves as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy (since 2020). He is actively involved in CIGRE Study Committee C5: Electricity Markets and Regulation and has served as a Canadian National Member of CIGRE SC C5 since 2014.
