Waterloo students capture top awards at OEC
Waterloo Engineering teams won a number of the top awards at the Ontario Engineering Competition hosted on campus from January 29 to 31. The 37th annual competition attracted about 300 competitors from 16 Ontario universities and colleges as well as judges, sponsors and guests.
Second year Waterloo mechatronics engineering students Colin Cooke, Michael Jonas, Jackson Fishe and Mitchell Catoen took first prize in the Junior Design contest.
A team of third year mechatronics engineering students comprised of Eric Shi, Wesley Fisher, Ken Geertsema and Danial Lizewsk placed second in the Senior Design contest.
Waterloo students took the top two awards in the Innovative Design challenge. First place was awarded to fourth-year computer and electrical engineering students Nicola Jiang, Ryan Gibson, Austin Cousineau, Stuart Alldritt and Ian Murray. Second place went to fourth year nanotechnology engineering students Eric Beauregard, Wenbo Cui, Stuart Murray and Laura Bahlmann.
A team of Waterloo Engineering students was honoured with the Special Award for Technical Excellence for Innovative Design.
Third year systems design engineering students Graham Blenaey and Ambika Opal came third in the Parliamentary Debates competition.
All first and second place winners will advance to the Canadian Engineering Competition to be held at McGill University March 3 to 6.
