Supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ Communities

Content Warning: The message below discusses updates related to last year’s hate-motivated attack in Hagey Hall.

Last year, Waterloo was impacted by a hate-motivated attack on campus. This devastating event has had continued effects on all of us at UWaterloo, but most significantly, on 2SLGBTQIA+ members of our community whose sense of safety, security, and ease on campus were put at risk.

We would like to inform our community that the accused involved in the June 28 attack pled guilty to numerous charges. While we hope this news offers some form of closure, we understand that the road to healing for our campus community is an ongoing and non-linear process. We also recognize that this news may be retraumatizing for many members of our community.

Your well-being is our priority and we encourage you to access the resources available on campus to support you. Campus Wellness offers a range of resources to help you cope with any feelings of anxiety or distress you may be experiencing in light of this news. If you are unsure what supports you might need or have access to, you can always reach out to Campus Wellness at 519-888-4096.

As the legal proceedings are still ongoing, we are unable to offer further comments at this time but will continue to share updates as we are able to.
