The Urgency of Social Justice

We are inviting University of Waterloo faculty, staff, and students to join us at The Urgency of Social Justice event between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm onSeptember 20, 2023, in and around the Arts Quad. The purpose of the event is to build awareness and broader support for social justice activities, programs, services, and advocacy groups at UWaterloo and in the local community. The event will kick off a year-long series of activities hosted by the Gender and Social Justice (GSJ) program. While centred in Arts, we are excited to broaden and deepen the conversation about social justice in our campus community and are inviting participation from across UWaterloo and from regional advocacy and support groups. The event is being organized by a group of colleagues, including staff, faculty, and students, with leadership from GSJ.

The event will include short speeches or performances by colleagues and advocates, poster displays, tables for on-campus services, community groups, and academic programs, music, entertainment, and refreshments.

Laura Mae Lindo: Uncovering the Racial Contract: A Story of Bill 67 in Ontario

In December 2021, Bill 67, the Racial Equity in the Education System Act, was tabled to ensure educators in Ontario were provided with the tools that they need to uphold their legal obligation as laid out through Ontario's Education Act: to build inclusive classrooms. While tabling the Bill was a response to community advocacy demanding that schools become anti-racist spaces - spaces that encourage and support racial equity qua praxis - what ensued raised questions as to the role, purpose, and vision not only for education in Ontario but also for the type of advocacy expected from public officials. This is that story.

Seating is limited! Please register for this event HERE to secure your seat.
