Impacts of severe wildfires on water quality and water supply
Speaker: Dr. Michael Stone
Abstract: Healthy forests are critical source water regions for downstream drinking water supplies in many parts of the world. Severe landscape disturbance by climate exacerbated severe large-scale wildfires can dramatically degrade water quality, which can have immediate and long-term effects on aquatic ecosystem health and water supply. This presentation highlights key insights from the Southern Rockies Watershed Program (https://srwp.ualberta.ca/) by describing physical and biogeochemical processes that degrade water quality and the challenges it presents for water supply management and the provision of safe drinking water.
