Led by Katherine Acheson, Program Director, the Global Engagement Program gives outstanding senior undergraduate students from all across the University of Waterloo a chance to turn their education and abilities to questions of pressing global concern in a capstone seminar program. Students work in small-group settings to build collaborative, interdisciplinary, and effective proposals for solving global problems ranging from international governance, violent conflict, food security, indigenous rights, refugee settlement, homelessness, and youth engagement in social policy. Led by Faculty members with active research interests in contemporary global challenges, the Seminar culminates in a Summit, offering students the opportunity to showcase their projects and proposals. Our course instructors will also be appointing Fellows to participate in the seminar and provide mentorship and expertise for the students.
In 2021, the topic is Pandemic – timely, complex, and urgent. The instructors are University of Waterloo Professors Shannon Majowicz, from the School of Public Health, and Shana MacDonald, from the department of Communication Arts in the Faculty of Arts. We are working with the instructors on appointing Jarislowsky Fellows.
