What is happening? IST has launched the IT Asset Management (ITAM) Selection project, aimed at addressing the lack of centralized IT asset management at the University. The project has two main goals:
- Provide a repository of IT asset data aggregated from various systems on campus for incident response handling and various compliance purposes (e.g., licensing and accessibility).
- Serve as an ITAM solution for groups that do not have an existing solution.
This work is not intended to replace existing ITAM systems on campus.
Why is this happening? Two information security audits[1] identified a lack of centralized IT asset management solutions as major findings. In addition, the NIST Cyber Security Framework and Canadian Centre for Cyber Security also recommend a central ITAM.
What is the impact of this work? By developing requirements through consultation with IT support units, and by selecting an ITAM solution that best meets those requirements, we aim to enhance incident response procedures, improve software licensing compliance, and provide data for tasks such as budget forecasting and software/hardware replacement planning. It also aims to provide a centrally supported solution for groups who do not have an existing solution or would prefer to use a centrally supported system.
Important dates/information: The project is expected to last six months. A town hall will be scheduled (TBA) to discuss the approach to this work and solicit input on requirements. Project members will also directly consult the University IT community throughout the duration of this project.
Questions? If you have questions or are interested in receiving updates on the project, you can join the IT Asset Management Microsoft Team or reach out to your IT Support Rep.
