Welcome to the International Education Week event calendar. Join the festivities and celebrate all things international!

November 18

Living library

A Living Library is an exciting chance to speak with a "Living Book" - a student from a country around the globe - and ask about their lived experiences in their home country! Participants have the chance to ask questions to challenge their biases and really listen and learn from their peers.

Spend about 15 minutes with a book at a time and talk to as many volunteers as you would like! Register to be a Living Book, or to participate and "borrow" a book during the event! 

What you can expect:

  • Ask questions or share your culture with other students
  • Engage in great discussions, challenge your biases, and expand your knowledge about other cultures

Where in the World? Co-op photo contest

The where in the world!? photo contest is an annual contest for you to share your co-op experiences abroad during international education week.

The winners will be decided during International Education Week from November 18 to 22, 2024. Learn more about submissions and the selection process. If you have any questions, please reach out to Laura Anderton.

Arts around the world

Share, learn, and try out different artistic styles from around the world! Participate in interactive stations where you can learn a new arts technique like Chinese Calligraphy, or Japanese Origami styles. View artwork created by students and staff and learn about the ways different cultures engage with different artistic techniques through this fun cross-cultural experience.

Anyone interested in sharing a technique or their own art are welcome to reach out to Allison Marlowe, Student Experience Coordinator at asmarlowe@uwaterloo.ca

Immigration info session - permanent residence

Have you been wondering how to become a permanent resident in Canada through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)? Join Waterloo's immigration consultants to learn about the OINP and the current requirements to apply for permanent residency under the Masters Graduate Stream and PhD Graduate Stream.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • This will be an online session. You will receive a MS Teams meeting link via email approximately 30 minutes before the session begins.
  • This session is targeted to graduate-level (Masters and PhD) international students.
  • Immigration Information Sessions are where you should start if you are planning on extending or applying for an immigration document, or you want to learn about the immigration regulations related to an immigration topic.

Making a Difference: Exploring International Development Opportunities

Discover the benefits of academic volunteering and learn how to make a difference in furthering your research, teaching and learning experiences while contributing to international development.  

Join us for a presentation from Academics Without Borders (AWB) and Engineers without Borders (EWB) for International Education Week and learn about their international development work and how you can get involved. This event will feature experiences and insights from AWB and EWB and will feature volunteers who have contributed to educational initiatives worldwide. Whether you're a faculty member considering volunteering or a student interested in the impact of global education, this event promises to offer valuable perspectives and inspiration.  All are welcome!

Culture and sustainability fair

The ELI Student Leadership Team has been hard at work planning a Culture and Sustainability Fair for International Education Week!

Come out and show your support and learn all about sustainable initiatives from around the world! Participate in interactive booths hosted by students in the BASE, GOALS, and EFAS programs at Renison as you learn about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and global initiatives in place to take action toward the different goals!

Mapping Out the Global Innovation Landscape conference

Hear from scholars, experts, and innovators about international opportunities in emerging tech sectors like AI, biotechnology, quantum, and more. This one-day conference will feature three livestreamed panels to help develop a report on how Canada can strategically engage with international partners in science and technology.

Study Abroad in Germany

Learn more about studying abroad in Germany from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Young Ambassador, Hannah Uitvlugt-Rafuse. She will talk about study and research abroad, as well as funding, opportunities that the DAAD has to offer both undergraduate and graduate students.

At the booth, there will be a spin to win wheel, some German treats, and DAAD merchandise!

International Movie Night

As International Education Week comes to a close, join us to watch an international movie!

Decide as a group on which movie you want to watch from a collection of options curated by Renison’s own students. Decide as a group if you want to watch your movie "subbed" or "dubbed" and enjoy a new movie that you may have never seen before! Engage in conversation about film and representation around the world, and even share some of your favourite movies with the group.

Popcorn and snacks from around the world will be provided!

Balinese Percussion Ensemble

The Music department at Conrad Grebel University College is hosting a Balinese Percussion Ensemble.

Balinese Percussion Ensembles are referred to as gamelan (gah-muh-lan), an Indonesian term for music ensemble. Gamelan comprise tuned percussive instruments made of bronze or bamboo, and may feature drums, flutes, strings, and sometimes dancers. The Grebel Community Gamelan Warga Santi will also be performing along with the student gamelan. This concert is suitable for all ages, and you will have a chance to try out the instruments afterwards. This concert is also part of the International Education Week at UWaterloo series of events.

One Sky Festival

Renison's Annual One Sky Festival is back for its 30th Anniversary!

Enjoy vibrant performances, fun and interactive booths, and taste delicious food as we celebrate Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cultures. Family and friends can enjoy face painting, writing their names in calligraphy, trying on traditional costumes and clothing of the featured countries!

Brunch and Learn Ep. 2: Canadian Winter Prep and Wellness

On episode 2 of "Brunch and Learn," you'll learn more about the Canadian winter and how you can prepare in advance to take on the cold season! Enjoy a brunch while learning about the various wellness programs and supports available to help you thrive. 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Registration opens on November 2.
