Lake Futures members attended the University of Waterloo Research Spotlight at the Grand River Conservation Authority. This event provided an opportunity to share water research happening in the Grand River watershed with local water managers and decision makers.
Researchers and policymakers from across the Great Lakes basin came together in Waterloo to discuss the current state and future approaches to integrated lake-watershed models, and how these models can inform science policy. Representatives from academia, governments and consultants from both the United States and Canada participated.
As part of Science Literacy Week, Nandita Basu gave a public lecture at the Waterloo Public Library titled ‘Protecting Our Water’. Community members and students shared the space to learn about the impacts of nutrient pollution and algal blooms, and how we can work to mitigate these effects.

A group of Lake Futures researchers travelled to Montreal, Quebec to take part in the joint meeting of the 27th Annual Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and the Canadian Geophysical Union. This joint meeting provides a unique opportunity for attendees from Canada and around the world to share ideas. This year marks the 100th anniversary of IUGG.
Zobia Jawed was invited to give a Keynote Lecture to high school students in the Shad program at McMaster University. Her talk was titled, ‘Sustainability: A Complex World of Interconnected Challenges’.
In her lecture, she discussed the complex and interconnected challenges surrounding sustainability, and the need for collaboration to tackle these challenges.
Lake Futures team members travelled to the University of Copenhagen to attend the third annual Legacies of Agricultural Pollutants (LEAP) meeting. The meeting was took place from June 19th -21st in Copenhagen, Denmark. Lake Futures researchers Nandita Basu, Philippe Van Cappellen, and Roy Brouwer, along with graduate students Tamara Van Staden and Joy Liu, represented the University of Waterloo.
Lake Futures researchers Jess Ives and Serghei Bocaniov presented their work at the 62nd annual International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) Conference. This conference was held in Brockport NY, USA and hosted by The College at Brockport, State University of New York. This year, more than 650 scientists and researches from academia, government agencies and non-governmental organizations gathered together to improve our current understanding of complex environmental problems affecting the world’s largest lakes, such as cultural eutrophication, invasive species, new emerging contaminants, and climate change.
