Large lakes account for nearly 90% of the surface area and volume of the world’s lakes. They are critical sources of freshwater supply for present and future generations, and a key driver for economic development and social wellbeing.
Despite their importance, large lakes are degrading rapidly due to rising pressure from humans and climate change. They face a growing list of serious threats and need to be protected not only for our generation, but for generations to come.

Grand Expressions is a remarkable collection of artwork by young Indigenous artists contributing to water research in the Grand River Watershed. In the exhibit, the youth – aged 10 to 26 – highlight water-related issues important to them and share traditional teachings using visual and written storytelling.
Lake Futures PI Nandita Basu and Co-I Philippe Van Cappellen were part of a delegation of 24 water scientists to participate in Water Day on the Hill. This event brought together top water scientists from 14 institutions across Canada to discuss key water challenges and solutions with federal officials on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
Lake Futures researcher Philippe Van Cappellen has been selected to receive an Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision from the University of Waterloo, nominated by current and former graduate students. The award will be presented at spring convocation ceremonies in June.
Nandita Basu has been invited to give a seminar at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York. The seminar titled ‘Land use legacies, climate change, and the future of our water’, will be held January 30th at 11:00am. Attendance is free.
Lake Futures PI Nandita Basu was welcomed as the new Collaborative Water Program Director. The Collaborative Water Program is a unique graduate program, jointly offered by 11 departments from all six faculties across campus, offering a truly interdisciplinary learning experience to prepare students to tackle the world’s complex water problems.
