Alissa Droog, Laura Bredahl, Peter Stirling, Shannon Gordon, and Brianna Samson presented the poster ORCID Education at the University of Waterloo (JPG) at the 2019 OLA Super Conference.
Shannon Gordon is co-organizing the 2019 Bibliometrics and Research Impact Community (BRIC) Conference, with Deirdre Moore (Natural Resources Canada), Eve Richard (Université Laval), George Duimovich (Carleton University), and Jeffrey Demaine.
Shannon Gordon was interviewed to inform a profile of the Library’s bibliometric efforts; this profile was published in Profiles of Academic Library Efforts in Bibliometrics & Altmetrics in February 2019.

In June, Kari Weaver and Sarah Brown co-authored a poster titled “Setting the Stage: Empowering Students to Challenge Established Power Structures in Research”. This poster was presented at the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Women and Gender Studies Section poster session at the 2018 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in New Orleans.
Caitlin Carter presented the following poster at the Canadian Health Libraries Association conference in St. John's, NL: "Librarian as course collaborator: an embedded model of information literacy instruction for first-year pharmacy students."
Eva Dodsworth presented at the International Conference on Cartography (ICC) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Sozopol, Bulgaria, June, 2018. In January, Caitlin Carter and Kate Mercer co-presented a 75-minute session on "Fighting imposter syndrome: how librarians are bridging the gap between the Humanities and the Sciences," at the OLA Super Conference in Toronto, ON.
2016
In 2016, Kathy Szigeti was appointed to the Research Intelligence Expert Group (RIEG), a node in the Portage network of expertise on research data management. The Canadian Association of Research Libraries launched Portage, comprising a library-based network of expertise on research data management (RDM) and national platforms for planning, preserving, and discovering research data. In turn, Portage has developed a network of expertise to provide practical help to assist with the management of research data at any stage throughout the data lifecycle. One node of this network is the Research Intelligence Expert Group. This group provides evidence to guide the development of best practices in RDM in Canada and will inform the RDM stakeholders community about policy and practice issues.
In December, Shannon Gordon and Jana Carson co-presented “Automating big data cleaning” at the University of Waterloo’s 2016 WatITis Conference.
In winter 2016, the University of Waterloo working group on Bibliometrics published the White paper: Measuring research output through bibliometrics, written by Lauren Byl, Jana Carson, Annamaria Feltracco, Susie Gooch, Shannon Gordon, Tim Kenyon, Bruce Muirhead, Daniela Seskar-Hencic, Kathy MacDonald, Tamer Özsu, and Peter Stirling.
Jessica Blackwell is currently president of the South Western Ontario Chapter of the Archives Association of Ontario.
In 2016, Jessica Blackwell was a mentor for two Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) students through the Association of Canadian Archivists and will continue to mentor in 2017. In April, she presented at University of Waterloo Teaching and Learning Conference: Opportunities and New Directions (OND) 2016 along with Trevor Holmes from the Centre for Teaching Excellence and a selection of students from Women’s Studies 101 on “Risk and resilience in an introductory women’s studies course.” Trevor and Jessica, along with another group of students, also spoke at the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Conference this past June. The talk they delivered was titled “Motivating learning in an introductory women’s studies course: Flexibility, reflection, experience.”
In November, Rachel Figueiredo was granted a study leave by the University of Waterloo to pursue research on the core competencies required by Entrepreneurship Librarians. The study leave includes 18 research days, spread across 5 months. She is working on this project in collaboration with Carey Toane, Entrepreneurship Librarian, University of Toronto.
In October, Jackie Stapleton was invited to deliver an interactive workshop titled “An introduction to systematic reviews and other review studies in health research” at the Ontario Coalition Institute, a summer institute for new global health researchers.
In August, Caitlin Carter was a peer reviewer of two chapters (Chapter 5: Digital pharmacy information resources and Chapter 6: Evidence-based medicine and clinical guidelines) from the national pharmacy school e-Resource known as “Informatics for Pharmacy Students,” produced by the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada (AFPC). Caitlin is also co-authoring the updated versions of Chapter 5 and 6, which will go live in 2017.
In June, Caitlin Carter and Gail Nichol (University of Toronto) co-presented the following Education Institute webinar: "Finding Authoritative Drug Information Online."
In June, Eva Dodsworth and Markus Wieland presented on "Crowdsourcing with ArcGIS Online for data collection and visualization," at CARTO 2016, in Fredericton, NB.
Eva Dodsworth and Trevor Ford presented on "Mapping the Second World War" at CARTO 2016, in Fredericton, NB.
Nick Richbell is on the Board of the Archives Association of Ontario (AAO) as Director without portfolio for a 2 year term, beginning May 2016. He has also been elected to sit on the Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation (WRHF) as Director/Community Member-At-Large. He is also continuing his work on the Membership Development Committee with the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA) and as a mentor to archival studies students across North America.
In winter 2016, Caitlin Carter was a collaborator on the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Knowledge Synthesis Grant proposal entitled “Knowledge synthesis as a precursor to interprofessional guidelines on vision training" with faculty from the Schools of Optometry and Pharmacy.
Rachel Figueiredo and Meredith Fischer presented Experiments with the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education at the January 2016 OLA Super Conference.
Jana Carson (Institutional Analysis & Planning) and Shannon Gordon (Library) presented Bibliometrics and the modern academic library: a unique cross-campus partnership at the University of Waterloo at the January 2016 OLA Super Conference. This session explored the increasing use of bibliometrics as an accountability tool, how bibliometrics inform discussions on research strength and emerging areas, and the use of bibliometric data in replicating university rankings results. This session also overviewed the University’s campus-wide Bibliometrics working group and White Paper on Bibliometrics, written in effort to bring discussion and clarity to the campus community around the use and misuse of common bibliometric measures.
Lauren Byl and Shannon Gordon presented Impact, attention, influence? Potential use of altmetrics in academic libraries at the January 2016 OLA Super Conference. This session offered attendees an introduction to the young and evolving field of altmetrics: what they are, who provides them, advantages and disadvantages, as well as how this data source can support an author’s workflow.

Andrew Nicholson (University of Toronto Mississauga) and Eva Dodsworth have recently published the book, "Using Google Earth in libraries". This is part of a Practical Guide for Librarians series. Available from Amazon.
In early June Eva Dodsworth attended the Canadian Association of Geographers conference in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC) and presented on a project she worked on with a faculty member and his students, creating a Land Use map for the Region of Waterloo.
Nick Richbell is a mentor, through the Society of American Archivists, to a graduate student pursuing his Master of Library Science (MLS) at the University of North Texas and is also a member of the Association of Canadian Archivists Membership Development Committee, 2015-2017.
Jackie Stapleton contributed her expertise on systematic review search methods as a co-instructor for the one-day UWaterloo workshop: "Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Workshop", June 22, 2015. Instructing with Jackie were faculty from the School of Pharmacy, Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science. and the School of Public Health and Health Systems.
Nick Richbell wrote the introduction to the following recently published book "Heckman's Canadian Pacific A Photographic Journey." Joseph W. Heckman was employed as a photographer for the Canadian Pacific Railway from 1895 to 1915 and was tasked with documenting the company's engineering department's buildings and structures such as bridges and stations.

Starting February 2015, Shannon Gordon joined the University-wide working group on Bibliometrics. Shannon also represents the Librarians’ Association of the University of Waterloo (LAUW) on the Faculty Association of the University of Waterloo (FAUW) Board of Directors as an ex-officio/non-voting member for 2014-2016.
Shannon Gordon, with colleague Kathyrn Mercer (uWaterloo), presented the poster “How two librarians became co-instructors for a first year course” at the Ontario Library Association Super Conference in January 2015. Their poster explored a Spring 2014 course that Shannon and Kate co-instructed at the University of Waterloo’s School of Pharmacy. Providing students with the skills to access medical and drug information, this course gave students the skills to critically appraise literature to support an evidence-based patient care model.
Alison Hitchens presented "What is #LODLAM?!: Understanding linked open data in libraries, archives [and museums]" at the Ontario Library Association Super Conference in January 2015.

Jane Britton will be speaking at the Waterloo Region Museum on November 17, 2014 on "A sweet little nest: Progress and change in the Waterloo Region after World War Two, a photographic essay".
While in Poland Eva Dodsworth presented twice at the International Geographic Union Conference in Krakow, held August 18-22, 2014. Eva presented on "Google Earth: an armchair approach to conducting and discovering research" and also presented at a poster session on "Multi-disciplinary research, management and discovery using Geoweb applications." As well, Eva recently contributed a chapter titled "The Non-developer’s Guide to Creating Map Mashups" to the book More Library Mashups.
Eva Dodsworth has been busy, having co-authored a book with colleague L.W. Laliberté titled Discovering and Using Historical Cartographic Resources on the Web: A Practical Guide for Librarians which was published in July of this year. In May Eva and colleague Andrew Nicholson presented at the 43rd annual Workshop for Instruction in Library Use at Western University (WILU 2014) on Geoweb Tools for Instruction.
Jackie Stapleton and Shannon Gordon recently presented a poster at the Canadian Health Libraries Association Conference in Montreal Quebec (QC) in June. The poster is titled "The evolving role of liaison librarians – supporting researchers in the systematic review process" and was authored by Marian Davies, Shannon Gordon, Rebecca Hutchinson and Jackie Stapleton.
Shannon Gordon along with colleagues Janet Goosney and Becky Smith from Memorial University published the article "Reflective peer mentoring: Evolution of a professional development program for academic libraries" in Partnership: The Canadian Journal of Library and Information Practice and Research.
On June 3, 2014 Nancy Collins along with Margaret Wall of University of Toronto Libraries will be presenting a webinar through the Education Institute titled "On-message outreach: Communication skills for everyone in your library." For more information see the EI 2014 summer calendar.
Alison Hitchens is now a Member at Large of the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing (CCC). The CCC is a national advisory committee on matters of cataloguing and bibliographic control. It also represents Canada on the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) for the Development of Resource Description and Access (RDA).
Meredith Fischer is contributing to the journal Technical Services Quarterly. She published quarterly reviews in the column "Tech Services on the Web." Technical Service Quarterly is available online.
Alison Hitchens has been asked to present on linked data in libraries at the OLITA Digital Odyssey in June. She also recently published part 2 of a 3 part OLITA appetizer on linked data.
Pascal Calarco is serving on two additional Center for Research Libraries-led Trusted Digital Repository (TDR) certification reviews in 2014, for Stanford University's CLOCKSS network, and for Canadiana.org. Marian Davies, Shannon Gordon, and Rebecca Hutchinson presented the poster "Systematic reviews and the evolving role of librarians" at Toronto’s Ontario Library Association Super Conference in January 2014. Their poster explored possible librarian roles in the systematic review process, and how librarian expertise can be used towards knowledge creation.
Shannon Gordon presented “Thinking outside the library: being embedded in a professional practice lab” at Toronto’s Ontario Library Association Super Conference in January 2014 with Nardine Nakhla. This project was done in collaboration with and in honour of their good friend and colleague, Lisa McLean.

Andrew McAlorum was announced as a 2014 Councillor-at-Large with the Ontario library and Information Technology Association (OLITA). Andrew is the Head of Digital Initiatives at University of Waterloo Library.
In December, Alison Hitchens presented “Linked library data” as an Information Systems and Technology (IST) Professional Development Seminar. Alison reviewed linked data concepts, why the library community is interested in linked data, and explored tools and prototypes in the libraries, archives and museums domain. Alison is a Cataloguing and Metadata Librarian.
Anne Fullerton presented “Flipping classes to teach information literacy” as a session through the Centre for Teaching Excellence in December. Anne discussed how she has designed “flipped classes” that utilize online resources and feedback to introduce students to information literacy topics such as creating structured search statements and the use of databases. Her experience suggests that this approach has improved the learning for students as their questions, reflections on the process of doing a database search, and in-class discussions demonstrate a better grasp of the nuances of searching for resources. Anne is the Liaison Librarian for Biology, Chemical Engineering and Systems Design.
In November 2013, Annie Bélanger presented the webinar “Responsive General Collection Management: Integrating Stakeholder Input” with Michael Levine-Clark, Associate Dean of Scholarly Communications and Collection Services with University of Denver Libraries. Annie is the Associate University Librarian, Information Resources & Academic Excellence, with University of Waterloo Libraries.
Sarah Brown presented "Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act - Library policies and procedures" at the Faculty of Information and Media Studies Student Conference in London, Ontario, in October. Her research focused on members of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL). In August 2013, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR), and the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) announced the launch of a Joint Task Force on Librarians' Competencies in Support of E-Research and Scholarly Communication.
Pascal Calarco was appointed a member of this international group.
Sandra Keys and Kathy Szigeti are members of the Canadian Community of Practice for Research Data Management in Libraries. This Community of Practice (CoP) evolved out of the Introduction to Research Data Management Service Course produced by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries in January 2013. At this course, it was agreed that there is a need for a forum to enable ongoing dialogue and exchange with others working in research data management. The CoP created a blog; Sandra and Kathy facilitate the Metadata and Standards section.
Alison Hitchens presented “MOAR RDA for Systems Folks” at Code4Lib North 2013 at Ryerson University. Alison is also now Chair for the ELUNA Primo Product Working Group.
Eva Dodsworth co-presented with Jon Morgan on “From in-person to on-line: Using open source apps for interactive map access and discovery” at the CARTO 2013 Conference, in Edmonton, Alberta, June 11-14, 2013. Eva also co-authored the following paper with Andrew Nicholson, ”Visualizing Our Futures: Using Google Earth and Google Maps in an Academic Library Setting”, in the 2013 ACRL Proceedings.
Shannon Gordon co-presented the paper "More knowledge on the go: A survey of mobile device usage in pharmacy" with Trish Chatterley (University of Alberta) and Vicky Duncan (University of Saskatchewan) at the Canadian Health Libraries Association Conference in Saskatoon, May 2013.
Nancy Collins (Waterloo), Lorna Rourke (St. Jerome's University), and Susan Shepley (Sheridan College) presented "Therapy dogs, exam-time cookies, and banning books: Community engagement in academic libraries" at the Atlantic Provinces Library Association Conference in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI), May 2013.
Jane Britton authored "Personal Studio: Documenting Growth and Change in the Waterloo Region 1946-1996 or From Mom-and-Pop to Drive-Up-and-Shop" in the Waterloo Historical Society's (WHS) 100th volume. The WHS annual volumes are available in local libraries including Dana Porter, call number: FC3095.W32 W3, 3rd floor.
Poet and retired librarian, Rienzi Crusz, was presented with an award at the Festival of South Asian Literature and the Arts on May 3, 2013 in recognition of the important contribution he has made to Canadian and Sri Lankan literature.
Pascal Calarco was elected to ELUNA Steering Committee, 2013-2015, following the 2013 annual conference and meeting, April 29-May 5, Athens, Georgia (GA). ELUNA represents some 1800 library customers of Ex Libris products in the U.S., Canada and Caribbean. He also presented "So that's how its done here! Comparing and contrasting strategic planning in two different institutional library contexts," Peer reviewed and accepted presentation at ELUNA 2013, Athens, GA. May 1, 2013.

Kathy Szigeti was elected to a 2 year member-at-large position with the Science and Technology Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries effective July 1, 2012.
Eva Dodsworth and colleague Andrew Nicholson (University of Toronto) have published their survey results, in Information Technology and Libraries. "Academic uses of Google Earth and Google Maps in a library setting." 2012. They also presented this paper at WILU, in May in Edmonton.
Tim Ireland presented at the COSCI 12 Conference in Dusseldorf Germany and co-authored a conference paper with Kathy MacDonald and Peter Stirling entitled "The h-index: What is it, how do we determine it, and how can we keep up with it?"

Pascal Calarco has been appointed to the NISO Discovery to Delivery Topic Committee, July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2015. Other activities include presenting Research Data Management at the University of Waterloo: How Can Librarians Help at CANHEIT 2012 in Saskatoon, Canada (June 11, 2012); presenting "Research Data Management at University of Waterloo: How Can Librarians Help" at the meeting of the Canadian Association of Geographers during Congress 2012 of the Humanities & Social Sciences in Waterloo, Canada (May 30, 2012); and co-presenting "Scholarly usage based recommendations: Evaluating bX in a consortium" (with A Greenberg, D Thomas) during the 2011 International Group of Ex Libris Users Annual Meeting (September 10-14, 2011).
Pascal Calarco and Alison Hitchens presented "From search to discovery: Finding global scholarly resources with Primo" at the WatITis Conference in Waterloo, Canada (December 10, 2011).
Alison Hitchens is a member of the adhoc Pan-Canadian Working Group on Cataloguing with research data management (RDA). Members are working on training modules for the new cataloguing rules which will allow cataloguers across Canada to participate in training. They are also taking part in pre-conferences, training days, and EI institutes. Alison's module is "Module 7: Cataloguing with RDA: Part 3: Recording attributes of Persons, Families and Corporate Bodies, and of Place."
Eva Dodsworth, Richard Pinnell, and Sandra Keys made significant contributions to the Scholars GeoPortal, which was recently launched. The GeoPortal received the 2012 Ontario Library and Information Technology Association (OLITA) Award for Technical Innovation at OLA.
