June is Bike Month! Guest post by Hannah Johnson.

As some of you may know, June is bike month! Biking is an excellent way to commute, keep in shape and get outside all at the same time.

Although my bike commute this season is a lot quicker and simpler, I still find that biking keeps me energized. As someone who does not drink coffee, my morning commute is all I need to wake me up in the morning! For some people cycling might not be something that comes to mind when considering your commute to work but if you live nearby and are physically able then biking is perfect mode of transportation.

There are many health benefits when it comes to cycling, which include: decreasing your blood pressure, helping with weight loss, increasing your energy, feeling more well rested and getting outside helps with your vitamin D intake! (Don’t forget sunscreen!) Biking is also kinder on your wallet; just think no gas, no parking pass, the list goes on! There is now an opportunity to give up your staff-parking pass over the summer months and still have a reserved place in your parking lot when the cold weather returns! Perfect for bike season!

Whether you’re driving or taking the bus Kitchener-Waterloo in the summer is overwhelmed with construction, for the most part when you are on your bike these detours won’t affect you! Another reason to hop on your bike! There are many trails around K-W both for commuting and just leisurely rides; the Iron Horse for example is a perfect way to get around the city. If you’re looking for something a bit further afield, biking to the St. Jacobs farmers market on a Saturday morning is a nice smooth ride, just make sure to bring your paniers to pick up some fresh local food! There are plenty of destinations that you are able to get to on a bike in our area so be sure to take advantage and explore!

If you’re just getting started cycling, here are a few tips.

  • Be sure to find a good bike that fits your needs and has a frame that is a good size for your body.
  • Next, you will need a helmet as well as a good bike lock!
  • I also find that it is important to have paniers (saddlebags) in order to carry a change of clothes or your lunch to work, as well as transporting groceries home.
  • Be sure to have water as well as some nutritious snacks, especially when the weather gets warmer.

Need I say more? There are so many benefits to biking and there is no better time to start biking (or start biking again) than bike month!
