Faculty of Mathematics Storage Renewal

Wednesday, December 3, 2025

What is happening?

The main storage appliance (NetApp) used in the Faculty of Mathematics (FoM) will be replaced. The current appliance has reached its end of life.

When is this happening?

The replacement will take place on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 from noon to 4pm.

What is the impact?

All activity on the current appliance will have to be stopped so the data can be synchronized as part of the replacement.  This includes:

  • home folders on linux.math (including ‘fastlinux’ and ‘biglinux’) and linux.student.math
  • network drives on windows.math and windows.student.math
  • network drives (M:, N:, P:, S:) on Windows laptops and desktops
  • connections to files.math and files.student.math (mfsfs.math)

Your normal methods of accessing storage will resume once the change is complete.

This work does not impact access to Microsoft cloud storage (OneDrive, Sharepoint).

Who is affected?

This affects all users of FoM storage (students, staff, and faculty).

What do you need to do?

Sign out of all impacted systems listed above by noon on December 23 and stay signed out until the change is complete.  Updates will be posted to this News Item.
