The factors influencing whether it is appropriate for Math Faculty Computing Facility (MFCF) to support a given software platform include:
- the size of the user community
- the availability of appropriate staff and their level of expertise
- the degree to which the it is supported elsewhere in the University
Efficient support that optimises system stability requires software to be upgraded regularly.
For operating systems in particular, new hardware is typically delivered with the current release of the relevant operating system, and may not run with an older release.
MFCF supports the current major operating system release ("version n") after sufficient testing and its predecessor ("version n-1"). Machines running version n-2 or earlier of an operating system will be encouraged to upgrade to a newer operating system as soon as possible or when they are replaced. Also, machines running version n-2 of an operating system will only be supported until they reach their rollover time.
