GPU loaner laptop request form

Description

MFCF has five high-end laptops for researchers interested in exploring GPU computing before committing to an expensive workstation.  The laptops are available for short term loans to explore GPU computing.

  • one Dell G15 with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Laptop GPU that can be used with the NVIDIA CUDA libraries for computing
  • two Dell Alienware x16 R1 with RTX 4080 GPUs, one running Linux and one running Windows
  • two Apple 16" MacBook Pros with M2 Max 12-core CPU, 38-core GPU, and 16-core neural engine

The CUDA libraries can be used with mathematical applications such as Python (Anaconda), R, and MATLAB.  See this page for more details.

Terms and conditions

These laptops are for temporary use only (8 weeks).

  • They must be returned in the same condition as they were given out.
  • They can only travel between campus and nearby residence.
  • For grad students, your supervisor may be responsible for the computer being lost, stolen or damaged.

MFCF will create a local administrative account for installing tools and applications.  Use your WatIAM account for daily work.  Use the administrative account only for installing tools and applications.

Make sure you save your data to an external source (files.math.uwaterloo.ca or OneDrive) before returning the laptop.  Once the laptop is returned, we will remove the administrative account and WatIAM user profile and all associated data to prepare for the next user.

MFCF will help you set up a local Linux distribution (using WSL (Windows Subsytem for Linux)) if you need to use tools that are only available in Linux (e.g. AI Feynman, FEniCS).

MFCF will respond quickly to RT submissions related to the laptops to avoid long interruptions during the short loan time.

Please confirm your acceptance of all these conditions:
