- You are given two accounts on this laptop: one admin (userid_admin) and one non-admin (userid)
- Use the non-admin for your daily work
- Use the credentials of the admin account to install software or change settings only when required
- Only install software from reputable sources
You must confirm your acceptance of all these conditions before local administrator privileges are enabled.
- The local administrator account will only be used to install work-related applications and approved peripherals such as headsets, printers, etc. Consult with MFCF before installing applications or purchasing/installing peripherals in case there are known incompatibilities or configuration requirements. Unapproved applications and peripherals will be removed if they cause problems. If the laptop gets into a non-functional state, MFCF will wipe and reinstall it back to a supported state.
- The local administrator account will never be logged-in directly. The local administrator credentials will only be used to install software or hardware.
- For security and stability reasons, operating system updates must be installed in a timely fashion. This includes performing the required reboots.
- Updates to MFCF managed software requires the laptop to either be on-campus (wired network connection, Eduroam with VPN active) or off-campus with the Campus VPN active, for 3-4 continuous hours at least once per week.
- You are responsible for applying patches/updates to any unmanaged software that you install.
- Laptops are not backed up by MFCF. MFCF is not responsible for the content of your laptop. If the hardware fails, or the laptop is corrupted/infected or needs to be wiped for any reason, all local files could be lost.
- SharePoint and Microsoft Teams channel file repositories are provided for the storage of shared departmental work.
- Non-shared files can be stored on the Math file server (files.math.uwaterloo.ca), or on M365 OneDrive (see Policy 46 for restrictions on certain data).
- Personal files must be stored/backed-up on external storage devices or personal cloud service of your choice, such as DropBox, iCloud, etc.
MFCF may revoke the local administrator privileges at any time.
