How to find a (MAC) hardware address

The Ethernet MAC address is a set of six numbers and/or letters separated by colons (e.g. AA:11:2B:34:BB:D1).

Windows

Windows 10 and 11

  • connect to the wired ethernet connection (i.e. dock or ethernet adapter)
  • click Start
  • in search box type: cmd
  • in the command window type: getmac /v

In both cases, report the Physical Address that appears in the Ethernet line.

Macintosh with built in Ethernet port

  • click the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner
  • click System Settings
  • in the left-hand pane click Network
  • in the upper right-hand pane click Ethernet
  • in the top right-hand pane find the option called details beside Ethernet
  • in the bottom left hand pane click the Hardware option and report the MAC Address that appears there

Macintosh with Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter

  • connect the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter
  • click the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner
  • click System Settings
  • in the left-hand pane click Network
  • in the upper right-hand pane click Thunderbolt Ethernet
  • in the bottom right-hand pane report the MAC address that appears in the Ethernet section
