UPCOMING EVENTS

Indigenous Initiatives 

The Indigenous Initiatives Office is excited to host a series of virtual events and resources to commemorate September 30th and give the University of Waterloo community the opportunity to learn more about truth and reconciliation.

Indigenous Initiatives is a central hub for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis researchers, faculty, students, and allies within the UWaterloo community.

The Indigenous Initiatives Office provides guidance, support and resources to ensure we are creating a shared vision towards the very necessary goal of reconciliation.

"Remember Me, Remember Us" - A Community Walk to Honour & Reflect

On September 30th, 2021 - Healing of The Seven Generations is hosting a community walk to spread awareness of and reflect on the tragedies experienced by Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island as a result of the country’s former residential school system.
 
The walk will begin at 10AM from 300 Frederick St in Kitchener and take the outlined route to the destination at Victoria Park’s Clock Tower where there will be a number of guest speakers and drumming to follow.
 
Everyone is welcome and is encouraged to wear orange!

PACS Scholarships

The Peace and Conflict Studies Department has extended the deadline for scholarships application to Thursday, September 30th, 2021 at 4:30 P.M.
 

If you are enrolled in a PACS academic plan, you may apply for these awards in September for funding this year. To learn more about the available scholarships, click here.

Composing Louis Riel's Dream: Exploring the history of the Red River Settlement through family stories and music

Conrad Grebel University College is pleased to announce this year’s virtual Benjamin Eby Lecture with Dr. Karen Sunabacka, entitled, "Composing Louis Riel's Dream: Exploring the history of the Red River Settlement through family stories and music", on Thursday October 21st at 7:30 pm

Equity and Inclusion consultant to lead PART’s October anti-racism book club

As of July 2021, PART has been hosting a virtual monthly anti-racism book club, with members of the University of Waterloo community to promote education, awareness, and a deeper understanding of race, culture, and ethnicity across campus.

On October 19, at 12PM, Angel Hammoud, Equity and Inclusion consultant at the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) will lead a discussion on Thomas King's "The Inconvenient Indian."

An educator with a background in teaching English and History, Angel Hammoud has taught in places like Kuala Lumpur and Fort Nelson in BC. He has been a teacher in the WRDSB for more than 11 years. As a cisgender, Southeast Asian male, Angel is keenly aware of the importance of facilitating knowledge sharing and discussions about xenophobia and racism. He works with teachers and administrators at the elementary and secondary level, helping them to become more empathetic, equitable, and inclusive educators.

UWaterloo PACS Facebook Group

A private PACS Facebook group has been recently created as a platform for students to discuss PACS events, questions, and opportunities, and courses in a student group setting among other students. This serves as an opportunity to connect and meet other students in the program.

UW Counselling

The UW Counselling Services offers a team of professionals that provides programming and services to help you lead a healthy and balanced life during this pandemic to help out students. Services are free for students and have transitioned to phone and video for Fall 2020. To book an appointment please call 519-888-4567 ext. 32655. JOBS, INTERNSHIPS, AND OPPORTUNITIES 

Science For Peace

Science For Peace, an advocacy organization, is holding an online forum for students across Canada on how to reduce and eliminate the dangers to humanity that nuclear weapons impose.
 

The organization is providing the following opportunity: The Science for Peace 2021 Blumenthal Prize Essay Contest. 

The contest invites Canadian undergraduate students to write a short essay on "How can humanity reduce the dangers and risks of nuclear weapons?"

Submissions will be judged by a panel of experts from Science for Peace. 

The winning submission will be awarded $500.00. Undergraduate student essays qualify for the essay prize.  The deadline for essay submissions is Dec. 20, 2021

Students submitting essays for the 2021 Blumenthal Prize are strongly encouraged to participate in the 2022 student forum. The Blumenthal Prize winner will be announced at the 2022 Student Forum.

The Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Policy, and Society (UJPPS)

The Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Policy & Society (UJPPS) is an emerging interdisciplinary academic journal that publishes peer-reviewed work of undergraduate students in social sciences and humanities. The journal provides a platform for aspiring academics to gain experience in publishing, research, and critical thinking while contributing to current debates and discussions in their disciplines.

The UJPPS is currently requesting submissions for the 2022 issue themed Politics of Inequality: Who is affected and how?

The submission deadline is November 1, 2021.
