EVENT RESCHEDULED: Fieldwork on the Frontline: Methodological Lessons, Challenges, and Insights from Security Research in Taiwan
Clare's presentation will feature her recent fieldwork experiences in Taiwan this past July as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute for National Defence and Security Research (INDSR). Her research, spanning across an ethnographic exploration, archival and media analysis, elite semi-structured interviews with scholars, government officials, military and intelligence personnel and diplomats, did not come without hurdles, obstacles and their own sets of challenges and limitations. This speaker series event seeks to discuss the methodological lessons, advice when applying for research ethics approval, challenges, opportunities, limitations and how to overcome them.
Bio
Clare Helene McKendry is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Her dissertation focuses on the evolution of Taiwan's policy in the South China Sea disputes. With a focus on the Indo-Pacific as an emerging professional in international affairs and defense policy, she writes extensively on China's use of maritime infrastructure as a grey-zone tactic, autocratic regimes' use of shadow fleets, and cross-Strait relations. She is currently a graduate student researcher at Defence Research and Development Canada's Centre for Operational Research and Analysis (DRDC/CORA) and a former Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute for National Defence and Security Research (INDSR) in Taipei, Taiwan. Elsewhere, she has published with the Canadian Network for Research on Security, Extremism, and Society (CANSES) on researcher safety and research trauma recommendations for universities, supervisors, and researchers.
