Content & Scope

To prevent health and environmental damage, the use of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) is being phased out in Canada. University waste containing PCBs is stored securely until shipped to a disposal facility.

The records include storage reports and disposal notices, storage facility inspection reports, and site decommissioning records.

  • All other records: 5 years.


Secure Destruction.


Responsible Units should document the disposal/destruction of official records using the University records destruction form or equivalent documentation, to verify that we are following our records retention rules.


SOR/2008-273: PCB Regulations.

Retention Rationale

The retention period is based on SOR/2008-273 s. 41 and s. 45 which require that prescribed records be kept for at least five years and on the Limitations Act, 2002, s.17 under which "there is no limitation period in respect of an environmental claim that has not been discovered."
