Moose Hide Campaign

The University of Waterloo is celebrating Consent Week this week from September 16 to 20 and we are delighted to announce Renison’s involvement with the Moose Hide Campaign!

The Moose Hide Campaign is an Indigenous-led grassroots movement dedicated to ending gender-based violence. This nation-wide movement is to spark change in taking action to end violence in our communities. An important element of the Moose Hide Campaign is the visibility of the moose hide pin. Wearing a moose hide pin signifies a commitment to honour, respect, and protect the women and children in our lives and to speak out against gender-based and domestic violence. The pin is a symbol of connection, concern, and solidarity.

We invite members of the Renison community to join our new Inclusion Coordinators, Summer and Keziah, in the Renison Cafeteria this week to sign our commitment banner and receive a moose hide pin:

Monday, September 16
Tuesday, September 17
Wednesday, September 18
12:00pm – 1:00pm
Renison Cafeteria

The pin is a symbol of connection, concern and solidarity. Co-founders Raven and Paul Lacerte were inspired to start the Moose Hide Campaign on an annual moose-hunt 12 years ago. The hunt took place on their traditional territory along the Highway of Tears in British Columbia, where so many Indigenous women, children, and Two-Spirit individuals were murdered or went missing. Raven and Paul were hunting moose to help feed their family for the winter and provide for cultural purposes. This was a grounding tradition on their land that passed knowledge from one generation to the other -- something the residential school system tried to erase.

We invite you to join us this week and to receive a moose hide pin. Limited vegan pins will also be available. More than 5 million pins have already been distributed across Canada to date.

Renison’s involvement in this important program signifies another important step to “embed Indigenization, decolonization, and inclusion, diversity, and equity throughout all aspects of Renison life”, as prioritized in our 2024 – 2027 Strategic Plan.
