Finding new ways to support students virtually

Friday, December 4, 2020

The Department of Sociology and Legal Studies was featured in the December 3, 2020 Daily Bulletin article  "Academic advising online: new ways to support Waterloo students".

With the University moving to online processes due to COVID-19, advisors got creative with how to better support students virtually and learn what strategies work best.

The Sociology and Legal Studies advisor and Religious Studies undergraduate coordinator, in collaboration with the History advisor (Brittany Woodhall), hosted an interactive virtual town hall on Microsoft Teams with Sociology, Legal Studies, Religious Studies, and History undergraduate students during the spring 2020 term's add/drop period. Students submitted questions in advance or in the live chat. The advisors also went through frequently asked questions and important information. They also used MentiMeter to track questions, gage how students were doing, and gather feedback. It was  an effective way to share information and connect with a large group of students.
