Dr Schulenberg has co-authored (with Laura Huey and Jacek Koziarski) Policing Mental Health: Public Safety and Crime Prevention in Canada (Springer, 2022). Drawing on the results of two ethnographies on police practice, this book addresses the important question of why mental illness has become ‘police property’ and for decades the de facto response to a health and social problem. Policing Mental Health considers the many ways the police are often the primary responder, and the demands placed on officers responding to these types of calls that have transformed aspects of public policing. Some possible upstream and downstream policy and practice solutions are discussed which may serve to reduce the footprint of the police in the lives of people with a mental illness.
