Board of Directors seeking applications to fill a vacancy

Wednesday, January 3, 2024

Following the November 1, 2023, appointment of Lisa Habel to the role of President-elect, the UWSA Board of Directors has a vacancy. In accordance with UWSA By-law article 11.4c, the Board of Directors will select one applicant to fill the vacancy by appointment until the next Annual Meeting (in October 2024). All interested UWSA members (both permanent and contract UW staff) are invited to put their names forward.

To apply, submit a statement of interest between 100 and 300 words by January 22 at 4:30 p.m. that describes how you would serve the UWSA’s mission, vision, and values in the role of director. Names will be removed from statements of interest before review by the Board of Directors.

The UWSA is committed to cultivating a progressive work environment at UW where staff feel safe, empowered to grow, and able to thrive. To ensure varied perspectives in strategic outlook for the Association, the Board of Directors is particularly seeking individuals who can best represent marginalized populations at Waterloo; please ensure that your statement of interest clearly describes any such lived experiences.

What’s involved in being a director

Collectively, the Board of Directors guides the high-level strategic governance of the UWSA and provides advice and direction to the Operations Team.

Individually, directors are expected to regularly attend and actively participate in board and committee meetings; bring their best ideas to the table by considering each topic at hand and establishing a perspective; and participate in training and development activities.

Directors are also the pool from which most staff representatives on Staff Relations Committee (SRC) and Provost's Advisory Committee on Staff Compensation (PACSC) are selected. These are two important committees that shape our working conditions and compensation, and some directors will serve in this capacity, in addition to their role on the board.

Directors receive one day a month of release time from their regular work duties to attend to UWSA business. Directors who take on an officer role (e.g., secretary or treasurer) receive additional time.
