The UWSA Appointments Committee is seeking applications for two positions: The Dispute Resolution Pool and Area Representatives Vice Chair. Applications are due November 20.
Call for members: Dispute Resolution Pool
The Dispute Resolution Pool is a group of 12 staff members who are available to serve should a formal Dispute Resolution Tribunal be required. Six members are nominated by the Vice-President, Academic and Provost and six are nominated by the UWSA Appointments Committee.
Openings: 1
Term: Immediately until April 30, 2026
Deadline: November 20, 2024
Terms of reference: Policy 36 Dispute Resolution for University Support Staff
What’s involved
Policy 36 Dispute Resolution for University Support Staff provides a confidential, effective, and fair way to resolve problems, disputes, misunderstandings, and disagreements concerning management action or inaction directly affecting a staff member. When a dispute proceeds to the formal stage, a tribunal is formed from the Dispute Resolution Pool. The mandate of a tribunal is to determine whether to hear a case and, if hearing a case, to conduct a hearing and render a decision. A tribunal's decision, which is final and binding on the parties, will be based on its determination of the relevant facts and a reasonable interpretation of a University policy, procedure, or guideline as it applies to the situation under dispute.
Time commitment
The time commitment for the pool is difficult to define as pool members are asked to serve on a Tribunal when the need arises. Training will be provided.
Qualifications
The Appointments Committee is particularly looking for staff members with some or all of the following characteristics:
- Knowledgeable about UW policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Focused on staff and protecting staff interests.
- Skilled in conflict resolution and advocacy.
- Self-reflective and committed to challenging implicit biases.
- Conscientious, collaborative, and equity minded.
- Willing to share their thoughts and opinions while holding space for the perspectives of others.
- Able to treat and discuss cases with sensitivity and confidentiality.
Relationship with the UWSA
UWSA appointees on University of Waterloo committees are asked to keep in touch with the UWSA Operations Team regularly so we can work together to gather input, coordinate responses, and keep members informed. All appointees are also ex officio members of the Area Representatives Council and may have opportunities to share updates at meetings or on Teams.
Appointees will have access to general training provided to UWSA volunteers, support from the Operations Team, and a community of UWSA volunteers.
