Contingent On Funding Positions to Get Coverage Under Section 7 and Appendix B of Policy 18: Staff Employment

The UW Staff Association has recently worked with UW to improve the benefits for employees at UW that are in contingent upon funding (CoF) positions.  Until now, positions that were CoF were not covered under section 7 of Policy 18: Staff Employment.  Section 7 outlines the procedures when a unit undergoes “organizational change” and there is job loss as a result.  Until now, when a CoF position ends due to the lack of funding, the employee would be entitled under the Employment Standards Act to written notice (or pay in lieu of written notice). In addition, staff members with 5 or more years of UW service would also be entitled to severance pay under the Act. CoF employees would also lose their “internal” status with the University on their final day of employment.

Now an employee in a CoF position at UW who has completed 10 years of service will gain the benefits listed in Section 7 of Policy 18 and Appendix B.  This includes;

  • Pay in lieu of notice,
  • Working notice
  • Retention of internal status and
  • Reinstatement

I would like to thank the Members of the Staff Relations Committee (SRC) that worked so hard and for so long to make this possible.  The work is not over, however, as the members of SRC realize that there is still room for improvement with the agreement and will be working diligently on this.
